Learn about Hispanic history in Washington State

Join local Hispanic historian Jenaro Castaneda on Monday, November 16 at 6:00 P.M. at the Olympia Timberland Library as he presents the contributions of the Hispanic community to the State of Washington from 1774 to present day. The discussion will begin with 18th century expeditions in ships constructed in San Blas, Mexico and conclude with information about present day accomplishments along with statistics about Washington State’s current Hispanic community. The presentation will include many slides and photographs.

Castaneda was born in Crystal City, Texas in 1937 and came to Washington State in 1946, in the back of a truck with 25 others. He worked as a migrant laborer with his family in Eastern Washington until 1959 when he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served three tours in Vietnam and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1981. At the age of 50, Castaneda graduated from Saint Martin’s University with a degree in Social Sciences and worked many years for the State of Washington.

Timberland Regional Library provides for the information, reading and lifelong learning needs of the Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, and Thurston county public at 27 community public libraries and 7 library service partner locations.
