Forest scientist Nalini Nadkarni to present:
Between Earth and Sky: Our Intimate Connections with Trees
Nalini Nadkarni, internationally renowned forest canopy scientist, speaker and professor at The Evergreen State College will describe her explorations of forests on four continents at a free public presentation at the Lacey Timberland Library on Saturday, November 14 at 1 p.m.
Dr. Nadkarni will speak about one of her areas of special interest: the multiple ways that trees fulfill human needs. She draws on her work with scientists, artists, dancers, poets, loggers and prisoners. In 2002, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship to support the public dissemination of her work.
One of Nadkarni’s most intriguing projects is the Evergreen Canopy Walkway, described on her Web page: “The Evergreen State College is exploring the feasibility of building a forest canopy walkway on its campus. Envisioned as a universally-accessible system of canopy-level walkways linking existing campus structures with an arboreal seminar pod, The Evergreen Canopy Walkway will provide unique opportunities to view and understand the forest from root system to tree top.”
Dr. Nadkarni is a member of the faculty at The Evergreen State College where she teaches in the Environmental Studies program. She is President of the International Canopy Network (ICAN), which she co-founded in 1994. Nadkarni’s work has been featured in magazines such as Natural History, Glamour, and National Geographic and she has appeared in numerous television documentaries. Her most recent book is Between Earth and Sky: Our Intimate Connections to Trees. Her Web page is http://academic.evergreen.edu/n/nadkarnn/
